My baby loves to pull the diaper wipes out of the container, and tissues out of boxes. so I thought I would buy a wooden tissue box toy, but the price tag was a little steep for a baby toy. I decided it would be easy to DIY instead. This ended up being a free project, I just used a sour cream container I had lying around and some scrap fabric. I used a couple different kinds of fabric, but I would just recommend using a cotton weave, or something more slippery like a satin or chiffon. I used a denim piece, but it didn’t work very well and I wouldn’t use that again.

Materials Needed

container with removable plastic lid

box cutter

enough scrap fabric to make ten 2.25″x6″ strips

scissors or rotary cutter

fabric pencil

Preparing the fabric

Cut out ten strips of fabric into 2.25″x6″ strips

Draw a one inch vertical line starting one inch below the top of the 2.25″ side of your fabric.

Using the buttonholer presser foot, make a one inch button hole along the line you just drew. Cut the fabric from one end of the buttonhole to the other. (Need help using the button hole presser foot? See my post here)

Finish the edges of the strips. I used my overlocking foot, but you can use a Serger or just do a zig zag stitch along the edge if you prefer.

Setting up the container

Using the box cutter, cut a hole in your lid for the fabric to go through. I made a 2″x .5″ hole in the lid, but it honestly ended up being too big, next time I think I’d make it closer to an eighth inch, but I was able to find a solution. I just placed tape sticky side up to cover most of the hole.

It’s a bit hard to see, but I already put the tape on the lid in this picture.

Last step is to prepare your fabric for your baby to play with. Stick the non hole end of the fabric into the hole of the next piece of fabric. Don’t stick it in too far or the fabric won’t come out nicely.

Put the connected scraps into the container, put the lid on and pull the first scrap through the container.
