I don’t have enough patriotic 4th of July decorations, so when I found myself at the dollar store today, I decided to go look at the seasonal section to find something to craft. They had these adorable star wreath forms and colorful mesh. I decided to make a 4th of July wreath. It cost me about $10 because I had the floral wire already. This craft does take awhile, but is cheap and it turns out so cute the time is totally worth it.

Materials

  • 5 tricolor mesh ribbon spools (each spool is 5 yards)
  • 2 ribbon spools (red and blue, 6 yards of each
  • Star wreath form
  • 1 star decoration
  • floral wire
  • scissors
  • needle nose pliers

Making the wreath

Attaching the mesh

Start by unrolling the mesh and cutting it into 5 inch strips (doesn’t have to be exact) roll each piece so it looks like a cylinder. Cut the mesh on a diagonal and make sure there’s a point on each end of your cylinder.

Cut your wire into 1.5 inch pieces (again doesn’t need to be exact)

Grab two cylinders of mesh, pinch the middle and place your wire over the mesh, place it on the star form and twist the wire. Use your pliers to get it twisted as tight as you can. The mesh shouldn’t move easily.

Repeat this all the way around the form. I did a piece on each point and dent, and 4 pieces on each side on the outermost wire.

Next place the mesh on each point on the middle star. Place it on the dents in the middle star as well.

Attaching the ribbon

Now it’s time to do the ribbons. Cut the ribbons into approximately 5 inch strips. Again, cut diagonally. You will want about 40 strips of each color. Grab one ribbon of each color and fold in half, creating a loop

Now put the loop over the inner star wire. Take the ends of the ribbon and pull them through the loop to attach them to the wreath form. Continue to do this with all the ribbon strips. Spread them evenly across your form.

Now it’s time to pretty up the wreath. Any pieces that aren’t twisted enough, twist them and press them in to help them fill out.

Now look at the back of the wreath and cut off all excess wire and turn the wires in so they won’t scrape the wall or door where you hang the wreath.

Lastly grab the star decoration. Using small pieces of wire fasten it onto the middle of the wreath. I just fastened each point to the corresponding wreath point.

That’s it! Now you have a gorgeous 4th of July wreath to place on your door!
