Girls and women’s pants do not have big enough pockets, and my phone is always falling out of them! I don’t like to buy clothes just because they have big enough pockets, so I learned how to make existing pockets bigger. Now my phone never falls out of my pockets!

Materials

  • Pants with too small pockets
  • small amount of woven fabric (a fat quarter will be enough, but you can probably use scraps you have around as well)
  • matching thread
  • scissors

Enlarging your pockets

First, turn your pants inside out so you can see your pockets.

Now, cut along the bottom of your pockets to open them up. If they’re curved, just cut most of the curve off, like the picture.

Now you will take the extra fabric. You will be making a mini pocket with it. Measure the width of your pocket (including the seam) and fold your fabric in half. Cut your fabric at the width you measured. (so my pocket was 5.5 inches and unfolded I made my fabric 11 inches)

You will need to decide how long to make your pocket, I measure by placing my phone over the pocket and checking how much longer I need the pocket to be. Add 1/2″ to the length and cut your fabric

Cut a square of your chosen size. Leave your fabric folded over and cut it the width of your pocket and to your desired length.

Sew or serge the bottom of the pocket and the open side so you have a mini pocket. (If you don’t have a serger do a zig zag stitch to stop fraying)

Turn your mini pocket right side out and place it in the pants pocket. Line up the seams and sew together. You want the right side to be on the inside of the pocket.

Now that you have made your pockets bigger, they will fit your needs!
