Sewing a buttonhole on your sewing machine is so easy! I have a brother sewing machine, yours might not look quite like mine, but it should function similarly. The key to making great buttonholes is getting everything set up and lined up perfectly. Once you’ve done that, it’s a cinch!

Using the correct presser foot

You need to get a button presser foot. This type of presser foot is quite large and plastic, it looks a bit scary at first, but it’s super easy to use!

Before you put your button presser foot on your sewing machine, you need to figure out how long you need your buttonhole to be. You will need to look at the measurement of your button and add about 1/8″ to the length of your buttonhole so you can get the button through the hole. (you can use a scrap piece of fabric to see exactly how big your need to cut your buttonhole to get the button through) Now look at the little prongs on the side of your buttonhole and make the inside of the prongs the length that you want the buttonhole to be.

Setting up your presser foot

Next, attach your pressor foot to your sewing machine. Then look for the thing in the back that is a long plastic piece. It’s on the back left side and has a picture of a buttonhole on it. Pull this down and make sure it is lightly touching the front prong of your presser foot.

Set your sewing machine to the buttonhole setting. They will look like one of the circled settings.

Line up your fabric

Line up your fabric with your buttonhole line. There are three red lines on the buttonhole presser foot, line the bottom of your buttonhole line with your three red lines. When you sew a buttonhole it will start with going backward, so make sure your presser foot is at the bottom of your buttonhole line.

Sewing the Buttonhole

This is the easiest part!! Now that everything is all lined up, you just sew. The sewing machine knows what to do and when to stop.
