I had a pair of linen pants with a big hole in the knee, so I decided to turn them into shorts. Instead of doing another plain hem, I decided to create a slit seam hem. I love the way these shorts turned out, and it was super easy to do! This hem looks great on shorts, but you could also possibly do this on longer pants or on a skirt or dress even if you wanted.

Mark how long you want your shorts to be and add two inches to the length . Cut.

The white line marks the final length I want my shorts to be

Next, use a pin to mark three inches up your shorts on the outer seam. Unpick the seam to your pin.

I decided to do a one inch slit on my shorts, if you want to make your slit larger, you can unpick your seam higher up and leave more fabric when you are cutting your pants so you have enough fabric.

Fold in the edges of the outer seam and iron and pin.

Now you need to fold the hem up 1/2 an inch. Iron and pin.

Fold the hem up 1 1/2 inches. Iron and pin.

The last step is to sew the slit seam hem. Start at the slit seam. Go back and forth over this spot. You want to make sure the area with the split is reinforced. Sew 1 1/4 inches above the bottom of your shorts.

Ignore that weird little jump in my stitching!
