The weather is finally warming up into spring and my daughter is asking for shorts. We always try to get the most wear out of her clothes so I decided to turn her leggings into biker shorts to wear with her dresses, since they won’t fit by next winter. You could also do this with any leggings that are worn in the knee. All you need is a pair of leggings, matching thread, scissors and a sewing machine.

You can use cotton or spandex leggings to make your shorts and you can make your shorts any length you like! It’s really important to use a double needle if you are making your shorts on the shorter side, since they need to have a lot of stretch.

Start by trying on your pants and marking how long you want the leggings to be. You can also just use a measuring tape to measure the inseam if you know what inseam you would like your pants to be.

Next, you will cut 3/4″ below your mark. Cut a straight line across the leg of your pants. Fold up the edge 3/4″ and pin.

Lastly, using a double needle, sew 5/8″ away from the edge of your pants. It’s important to use a double needle to allow your thread to stretch with the fabric.

Enjoy your new biker shorts!
