I recently got a big box of clothes for my daughter from our buy nothing group. It included some really cute onesies, but there is one problem. My daughter doesn’t wear onesies, she’s too old for them and doesn’t like to sit still long enough to put one on. I didn’t want to get rid of them though, they were so cute and lots were part of matching sets. I decided I could turn a onesie into a shirt. It was a super easy and simple fix and only took a few minutes. I used my mom’s serger to make the hem, which is easier, but you can use your sewing machine and overlock foot.

Tutorial

Lay out your onesie as flat as you can. You don’t want any wrinkles in your top.

Cut your onesie at the lowest part of the top, right above the leg holes.

Using your serger or overlock foot, sew along the cut edge of your top. I pulled the top as I did it to do a rolled lettuce hem. If you are using a serger, you will need to tuck the tail in to finish off the hem. Take the serger tail and use a darning needle to pull the thread through the hem.

That’s it! I was able to do about six of these in 45 or minutes, so it’s a really quick project and can give new life to unusable clothes. Now you have turned a nonwearable onesie into a shirt!
