Witches potion displayed in a mini cabinet. Potion are lined up on two shelves

When I started putting out my Halloween decorations the other day, and I realized I don’t have as many as I would like, so I set out to make another cute decoration: a witches potion cabinet! I used mostly supplies I had on hand, but you could find all these items at your local craft store. I chose to make a mini version of a witches potion cabinet with some vials I had lying around, but you could always go larger with mason jars, or empty glass jars from foods, such as pasta sauce containers.

Supplies:

Supplies for Witches potions: four food coloring bottles (red, yellow, blue, green) 3 containers of beads (green and metallic) a small pile of cotton, two containers of glitter, a white sticker sheet and 5 small glass bottles
  • 5 or more small glass vials with a stopper (I bought these at a local craft store a few years ago)
  • Small glass beads
  • White stickers
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • glitter (You will need a chunky type glitter and a shimmer glitter)
  • Cotton stuffing
  • Acrylic Paint
  • hot glue gun

Witches Potion #1 Eye of Newt

I used beads to make the “Eye of Newt” vial. Fill your vial with small beads, almost to the top. It works best with small, slightly transparent glass beads. Next color some water with green food coloring and fill to the top. Put glue around the cork and seal the bottle.

Witches Potion #2: Dragon’s Essence

Make very dark red water and fill the vial about 1/4 full. Next fill your bottle with cotton. stuff it nice and full. Pour some clear water into the bottle, almost to the top. Lastly drop a few drops of yellow food coloring directly onto the cotton. This should create a red to orange Ombre. Put hot glue around the cork and seal the bottle.

Witches Potion #3: Spider venom

To make this potion you will need some glitter, I used a fine purple/pink glitter. pour in just enough glitter to cover the bottom of your bottle, maybe a little more. Lightly pull apart a few small pieces of cotton stuffing so you have loose strands in your bottle. Lastly pour in some dark purple water, it should look almost black. put hot glue around the cork to seal the bottle. Once everything is sealed, you will want to shake this so the glitter gets caught on all the pieces of cotton stuffing.

Witches Potion #4 Bats Blood

This is the most simple bottle. I mixed 1 part red paint with 1 part water, then added one drop of black since my paint was too bright. Mix the paint with the water and pour into the bottle. Seal the bottle.

Witches Potion #5: Star Dust

The glitter I used for this was hydrophobic, so it didn’t mix well with the water. I ultimately liked the way it turned out, but if you want a more even shimmer, you may want to choose a different type of glitter that mixes well, or you could just use glitter glue. Fill the bottle about 1/3 of the way full with white glitter, then swish the bottle around so the shimmer glitter sticks to the sides of the bottle. Now pour black water into it. You will need to stir the glitter in to help it look shimmer

Potion Labels

I just used circular stickers that I had laying around, but any sort of sticker or even paper and some glue will work. I used a black pen to write in an “old timey” font, then cut the top and bottom so the label had straight edges on top and bottom and round sides. It fit my bottles the best to do it this way

Potion names written on stickers. From left to right: Dragon Essence, Star Dust, Bats Blood, Spider Venom, Eye of Newt
5 potion bottles lined up. Dragon essence, star dust, bats blood, spider venom and eye of newt

Displaying your witches potion

I made an easy little witches potion cabinet to display my potions, but you don’t need to! You could put them on a small shelf or window sill, or put them in as part of a Halloween display! Have fun and good luck!
