You may have seen one of these tools before, but if you’re like me, you have no idea how to even use it or why. It is a seam guide, this works by helping you measure where to sew when you are unable to use the throat plate to see where to place your sewing. Most people use this for quilting and decorative stitching. It can also be used to sew a hem that extends past the throat plate.

Seam guide: setting up

First you need to find a presser foot that works with your seam guide. It will have a small hole in the back of the presser foot. Most walking feet will have this hole and a few others do too.

Now you need to put the guide through the hole and if there’s a screw (mine doesn’t have one) you will want to tighten it slightly.

Now you measure the distance between the needle and the seam guide. I made mine two inches.

Attach the presser foot. You might need to remeasure the distance if it moved while attaching the presser foot.
