A tear in jeans pockets are the hardest place to patch. You have to be careful of the pocket so you don’t sew into it, but you want to make sure the patch gets over the rips so your tear doesn’t get any bigger. Often when you have a rip here your pants aren’t long for this world, but I’m all about wearing them for as long as I can, so I’ll show you have to fix a tear in the jeans pocket anyway. You will need iron on patches, the sew on patches just don’t cut it for this spot.

Patching your tear in jeans pocket

Start by placing your iron on patch to the inside of your jeans. Make sure your patch goes at least 1/4″ over the edges of your tear. Iron your patch to the jeans. Make sure to press it really good so it is a stuck as it gets.

Next, place your darning foot on your sewing machine. If your tear starts above the pocket, like mine, start by patching that part separately. Patch like you normally would. Go up and down and right and left, sewing over the tear. When you get close to the pocket go very slowly and you may need to gently lift the darning foot so yours doesn’t get all wonky like mine. I will probably need to go back in by hand and sew the spot closer to the top of the pocket.

Now, start at the tear that is at the pocket. sew right along the edge of the pocket, then go back up and down getting farther away from the pocket as you go. Make sure to go past the tear. Now go perpendicular to the pocket. Get one stitch onto the pocket, then go past the tear. Do this all the way down the tear.

That’s it! You’re all done! If you did a better job at matching thread than me, you’ll barely be able to see the patch!
