Scrunchies are in style! I decided to make a few for myself. I used scrap fabric I had, it doesn’t take very much and you can use the scraps from clothes you’ve made to make matching scrunchies too! You can use any fabric to make these, but you probably want to use something soft and not too coarse so it doesn’t hurt your hair. I made a mini scrunchie in this tutorial, but it’s easy to make full size ones and it’s such a quick and easy process that you can experiment with all types of scrunchies.

Materials

scrap fabric, enough to make at least a 3″x10″ rectangle (refer to the chart below if you want a larger scrunchie)

1/4″ elastic, 5 1/2″-9 1/2″

matching thread

Scrunchie Tutorial

Cut your rectangle and elastic.

Fold your fabric lengthwise with right sides together and pin along the long edge. Sew along the edge 1/4″ seam.

Turn the scrunchie right side out. You can use a safety pin to turn it easily.

Pull your elastic through the scrunchie. Pin one end to the side of the scrunchie so the elastic doesn’t go all the way through. Again, use a safety pin to help you pull the elastic through.

Make sure your elastic isn’t twisted and zig zag sew 1/4″ from the edge. Go back and forth 4 or more times. You don’t want the thread to break and you will be putting pressure on it.

The last step is to close up your scrunchie. Carefully fold the ends in about 1/4″ and hand sew the edges together. Sew in the folds so you can’t see the stitches when you’re done.

That’s it! Enjoy!
