I wanted to sew a cute Valentine heart to put on my baby’s headband for Valentines Day. I decided to make it look a little floral, and I patterned it off other flowers that I have made for headbands and hair pieces before. This is an easy tutorial that should only take 30 or so minutes. I used my sewing machine, but honestly, it wasn’t necessary, and if I decide to make another one, I would just hand sew the whole thing. It’s so small that I think a sewing machine just made it harder, not easier.

Materials

A small amount of fabric. I used a 2″x16″ strip of fabric. I recommend a synthetic fabric, preferably something thin and silky for the best look.

Matching thread (I didn’t do this and regretted it, I had to do a lot of extra work)

A lighter (if you choose to go a non-synthetic route then you will need a fray stop product instead)

Valentine Heart Instructions

Cut out your fabric into a 2″x16″ strip of fabric, fold over lengthwise and pin.

Baste along the long edge of the fabric about 1/8″ away from the edge.

Pin the middle of the fabric and start to gather from both sides. Make sure both outside edges start to curl in (this is the top of the heart shape)

This part is the most difficult part, take the short edges of the heart and bend them so they are touching the long edge of the fabric and sew straight.

Make sure all the raw edges of the fabric are tucked on the back, take your lighter and lightly melt the edges of the fabric, make sure they melt together so the top of the heart stays together and circular.

Lastly, fold the heart in the middle (where your pin is) and sew up the middle about halfway up the circular part of the heart, this will create the bottom V look.

Back of valentines heart, it is folded in half
Completed Valentines heart

All done! Your Valentine heart is complete, I am going to put it on a headband, but you could place it on a hair clip or any other application you can think of.
