A few months ago, I had some cute, soft scrap fabric left from sewing a quilt, and it was too small to do much with, but I didn’t want to throw it away, so I decided I would find a way to use this fabric. I decided to make a scrap fabric block. I loved it so much I ended up making four. You can use any fabric that you have, but I chose to do 6 different colors for each block. The goal is to use up fabric you already have, not to buy more.

Materials:

  • 6 4″x4″ squares for each block you’d like to make
  • matching thread
  • stuffing (or other scrap fabrics)
  • Optional: bell rattle

Getting started

Start by marking 1/2″ in each corner for each square. You will only sew starting from the mark on one side to the mark on the other.

Line up 4 squares and sew each of them together into a straight line. Make sure to start 1/2″ inch in from the edge and end 1/2″ before the edge

sew on the last two blocks. I have numbered the squares to make it easier to follow this tutorial. You will sew square 5 on top of square 2 and square 6 under square 2.

Now you will start sewing the block to stand upright. Make sure that you keep sewing 1/2″ from the edge, and be careful not to let the seam allowance get stuck under your stitches. Make sure to continue to line up the edges of the squares you are sewing and tuck the third piece of fabric away.

Sew square 1 to square 6 and square 1 to square 5

Repeat on the other side with square 3. Your block will look like a box with a lid flap

Sew along two more of the sides of your last square. Flip your box right side out and stuff.

Fold the flaps in so the last edge of the block is even, pin and hand sew the last seam. If you need a refresher on how to hand sew, see my tutorial here. Then you’re done! enjoy your scrap fabric block!
