My family always sets up our Christmas decorations on Black Friday. As we were setting up our holiday decorations, we realized that our deer needed a Santa hat! So I set out to make one. It looked so cute, I thought I would share how I made it with you guys. I sewed this hat, but you could easily make this hat by gluing it as well if you aren’t a big sewer.
Materials
- Red fabric – you’ll need about a 6″ square. I used a synthetic silky fabric, but you could easily use a felt or velvet fabric instead
- White felt for the trim- you only need a couple of inches of this fabric, I used felt, but a velvet or fur fabric would work great too
- White Pom Pom
- Matching thread or glue if you aren’t sewing
- Santa hat pattern (below)
Cutting out your hat
Cut out your Santa hat and the white trim using the pattern below. After you have this cut out, if you are using a fabric that can fray, you will need to use a technique to stop it from fraying because we won’t be hemming this hat due to its small size. I melted the edge of my fabric since it is synthetic. (More methods to stop fraying can be found here)
Sewing your hat together
Place your trim on the bottom of the hat fabric, making sure the bottom of the trim and bottom of the hat line up. Pin the trim to your hat and sew down the middle of the trim, 1/4″ from the edge
Fold the hat together with the right sides facing and sew down the side a 1/4″ seam. Turn the hat right side out.
Attaching the Pom Pom
Once the hat is turned right side out, take the point of the hat and mush your pom pom into it, and zig zag the pom pom on onto your hat. Enjoy your new mini Santa hat!
