I needed a new lanyard for my keys, and I decided to make it out of some fabric I had leftover from another project. This wasn’t too difficult and it only took 30 or so minutes. I loved getting to make a wristlet that is a bit thinner than what you normally find online, it fits a bit better in my pocket. You will need a swivel clasp for your wristlet, I just used the one off my broken lanyard, but you can buy one at a craft store or online for cheap.

Materials

2″x15″ rectangle fabric (this width turns out to a 3/4″ wristlet, you can make it wider if you prefer)

1 1/2″x15″ rectangle two sided fusible interfacing

swivel clasp

matching thread

Wristlet Tutorial

Cut out your fabric and fusible interfacing. Next, lay your interfacing on the wrong side of your fabric. center the interfacing so there is 1/4″ of fabric on each side. Iron the interfacing to your fabric.

Fold the long sides of your fabric down 1/4″ and iron.

Fold your fabric in half lengthwise and iron flat. Pin it down so the ends are as even as possible.

Sew around the whole lanyard. Sew 1/16″ away from the edge of your fabric.

Now, this is the hard part, you will need to attach the swivel clasp to the fabric. It can be a bit difficult to line it all up nicely. Start by sliding the clasp on the lanyard about an inch down.

Now slide the other end of the fabric through the clasp. There will be one end inside the wristlet, and another on the outside.

Adjust the ends of the wristlet so the inside end is 3/4″ from the swivel clasp. Pull the outside end of the wristlet so it is 1 1/4″ from the swivel clasp.

Fold the outside piece of fabric in 1/4″ of an inch and pin.

Sew the wristlet down. Place the outside piece of your wristlet on the top and sew in a rectangle around the quadrupled up area of fabric. Sew over the rectangle at least 3 times, then sew an X through the box, again, sew at least 3 times. This part of the wristlet is very thick and you might need to go slowly so your sewing machine doesn’t jam up.

You’re all done!
