I just recently got a few new pairs of pants. As a short girl, I can never find pants that are the right length for me. They are always too long, often waaay too long. I have gotten great at hemming pants, but I recently decided I wanted to mix it up and not just do a basic hem. I decided to do a frayed hem instead. This is a super fun way to add a little style to your jeans, and it is so easy!

Materials

  • A pair of pants that is too long
  • Matching thread
  • Pins

Instructions

First you need to mark your jeans. Put your jeans on and use a pin to mark the length that you want your jeans to be. It is helpful to mark both the inside and outside of the jeans at the length you want to help you make your jeans straighter, especially if you are sewing on wide leg jeans.

Cut your jeans at the pins. Make sure to line up your jeans so you aren’t cutting the bottom half of the leg too short/long.

Using your matching thread, sew a straight line about 1/2″ above the edge of your jeans. The thread will keep your pants from getting too frayed past where you want the frays. So if you want a smaller fray or you don’t just want a straight fray (like a V cut hem) adjust this line accordingly.

Now you will need to fray your fabric. Going around the pant leg, make small, vertical cuts about 1 inch apart. This will help you fray your fabric faster and easier. Using a pin, pull at the fabric to start the fray. Keep going until you are close to the line you sewed on your fabric, then move onto the next one inch section. Continue this all the way around.

That’s it, your frayed hem is done! You can wash your pants before you wear them, which will help your fray look a bit more natural.

If you also want to make a plain hem on your pants, here’s a tutorial for that too!
