Keep the original hem

I am so short that I often need to hem my jeans. I like to keep the original hem most of the time, since it’s less noticeable that they have been altered. This is a really easy and quick way to hem your pants and it looks great. This is the easiest way to hem a pair of jeans that I have used. I like to keep the original hem since it’s much harder to tell at a glance that you have messed with the hem, and this is much easier than trying to recreate the look of the original jeans.

Materials

  • Pants with too long legs
  • matching thread
  • pinking shears (or a serger)

Instructions

Try your pants on and mark the length of your pant legs that you want.

Fold up the hem so the original hemline is about 1/2″ above the point you marked and pin.

Sew as close to the original hem line as you can. I could have made my line closer to the original hem than I did, but it turned out ok. I would try to get the line right next to that original hem instead of 1/8″ away like I did on this one.

Now it is time to cut the excess fabric. I used my pinking shears to cut this in order to reduce fraying. You can use a serger for this if you have one, but otherwise pinking shears are much easier. Cut the excess fabric about one half an inch away from the stitches.

Iron your hem down so the fabric lays flat. I ironed both edges of the fabric up toward the leg of the jeans and tried to get it as flat as possible.

Now you are done and you can easily hem a pair of jeans too! If you interested in other ways to hem a pair of jeans, click here
