Today I decided my dog needed a bow tie. I thought it would look so cute on him. I decided to pull out some scrap fabric and make him a cute little bowtie, I chose a nice green woven cotton fabric to be festive for St. Patrick’s day. This should take about 30 minutes and has very little sewing. It is pretty ironing heavy though. This project will use hand sewing, if you need a bit of a reminder on how to hand sew, refer to my tutorial.

Materials

enough fabric to make a 5″x10″ and a 1.5″x2.5″ rectangle

needle and matching thread

enough elastic or stretchy fabric to wrap around your dogs collar

Bow Tie Instructions

Cut out and iron your fabric rectangles. Starting with the large rectangle, fold the long edges in 1/4″ and iron flat.

Fold the short edges in on each other so they overlap by about 1/2″ in the middle of your fabric. Iron flat

Accordion fold your fabric in approximately 5/8″ accordions (refer to the picture below to do this step)

Using your needle and thread, sew down the middle of your bow tie. This is just to keep the bow tie folds together while you finish it up.

Grab your smaller rectangle and press the long ends to the middle of your fabric.

Sew the short end of your rectangle to the back of the bow tie, wrap it all the way around the middle as tightly as possible. Fold the raw edge in and sew to the bow tie.

Using your iron, flatten out your bow tie. I turned on the steam to help flatten it out so it looks more like a bow.

Sew your elastic onto the back. This will allow you to slide your bow on and off your dogs collar. I used a wide elastic because it’s what I had, but I recommend going with a 1/4″ or 1/2″ elastic if you can. If you are using a stretchy piece of fabric, just cut it to about 1/2″ wide.
