A blind hem is great to use for nice pants and other garments when you don’t want an obvious hem showing. I used to just hand sew any time I wanted a blind hem, which was fine, and it looked great, but it would take forever! I started looking through my presser feet and I realized I had a blind stitch presser foot, so I set out to learn how to use it, and it was easier than I thought. So, I’d like to share my new found knowledge with you.

Blind Hem Presser Foot

This is what a blind hem presser foot looks like. This is brother sewing machine presser foot “R”

Hemming your fabric

Before you can sew your fabric, you will need to make and press your hem. You will want to do a double folded hem, so the raw edge is completely hidden. Make sure to press your fabric well, if it’s not pressed flat, your hem won’t look right.

Now fold the hem back over so it is touching the right side of the fabric. I pinned the hem back so it would stay in place, but if your fabric is prone to showing pin holes, or you don’t like using pins, you can lightly iron your fabric back, though you want to be careful not to press too much, since you don’t want any creasing.

Time to sew your blind hem

First, get your sewing machine ready. Put your blind hem presser foot on your machine, and set your machine to the correct stitch. The stitch should look like mine does below.

Line your hem on your sewing machine. You will line the folded end up with the middle metal piece of your presser foot.

Finished Look

Once you’re finished, your hem will look like this

Unfold your hem, and press your fabric flat

Looking at my fabric, it doesn’t look completely invisible, but that is because I used white thread on a dark blue fabric, if the thread matches your fabric, it will be unnoticeable.
