Patching up knits using a sewing machine

I’m tough on clothes, so I often find myself wondering if I can fix the holes in my clothes and how I can patch it up. I especially seem to rip holes in my knits. After experimenting a few times I have finally found a great way to fix holes in my knit fabrics using my sewing machine. It’s so quick, it only takes a few seconds. Patching knits is so easy now that I can use my sewing machine to do it.

Setting up the patch

You will need a few things to fix your knits:

  • Matching thread
  • free motion sewing machine foot (see my tutorial for how to use)
  • Patch – you can buy a patch, but you can also just use a small piece of another fabric, make sure your patch is just a bit larger than the hole

Sewing up the hole

Line the patch up on the inside of the fabric, pin it in place if needed.

Starting about 1/4″ from the hole make up and down lines across the hole, make sure all your stitches go past the hole, this will reinforce the hole from ripping again. Then repeat, but make your stitches go horizontal across the hole.
