If you are just starting out sewing, there are a few products that are must haves. These are my top 6 favorite products that have been so helpful for sewing projects.

1. Sewing Machine
This one might seem like an obvious one, but it is so helpful to have a sewing machine. It makes your projects go much faster, and while there is a learning curve, it’s ultimately much easier to make your products look nice. There is a wide range of sewing machines, both in cost and functionality, but you honestly don’t need a big fancy sewing machine when you start out.
2. Rotary Cutter
Rotary cutters make your fabric cutting 10x easier and faster. They are so much better than scissors, especially for large projects and straight edges. This is my favorite.
3. Cutting Mat
You need to get a mat to use your rotary cutter on. I recommend getting the biggest size that will fit in your sewing area. These are also so helpful for making sure your fabric is lined up and squared up correctly. Get a cutting mat here.
4. Quilting ruler
If you want straight cuts and seams on your fabric, you need a quilting ruler. This is especially helpful if you have the previous two products I have suggested, so you can use your cutting mat to help keep lines straight and square. You may even want two of these if you start sewing enough. One large one for big projects and one small one since the large ones can be a bit cumbersome and you likely won’t want to use a large one for a small project. You can get one of these here
5. Seam Ripper
No matter how good you get at sewing, you will inevitably make a mistake and need to take some stitches out. Having a seam ripper is so much easier than trying to use scissors to take out your mistakes. I recommend getting one from your local craft/sewing store, as that’s where they will typically be the cheapest.
6. Extra Bobbins
If you do a lot of sewing, you will want lots of extra bobbins so you don’t have to empty each bobbin every time you want to change colors. You can find the ones that fit your sewing machine here.
