You might have heard of crochet (or knit) blocking. It’s usually used for crocheted squares or clothes to make the yarn lay correctly. It’s pretty easy, you just use water and a few pins. 3D crochet blocking is also pretty easy, but it’s a bit more complicated. You need to find a way to hold your crochet project in the correct place which can be difficult when you’re talking about a 3D project. I found a few ways to make it easier.

Crochet blocking your project

My project before blocking. It looks floppy and the bottom doesn’t want to lie flat

Once you have finished crocheting your project, you will want to try to find an object that will mold your object to the shape you want. I used a glass storage container. If you can’t find something, you can stuff your project instead. When it’s time to use your shaping object, wrap your project in a layer of paper towel then put stuffing or crumpled newspaper in your project. stuff it tight and as evenly as you can to help your project look nice.

The first step is to get your project wet. I thoroughly wet my project in the sink to make sure all the yarn got wet.

Gently press your project with a towel until it is damp. You don’t want to wring your project.

Put the bowl (or whatever you are using) in your project. Make sure your crochet project looks the way you want it to, because blocking will make your project keep its shape, so you need to be very precise. I gently wrapped my project in yarn to make sure it stayed in place. I didn’t wrap tight to avoid any dents.

If you are using a starch, (which you should if your project is loosely crocheted or if you are using a softer yarn that doesn’t like to keep its shape) use it now.

Let your project dry completely. Once it is dry, you can remove everything from it and it is ready to use!
