I have already made a post on taking women’s measurements that you will run into in almost all women’s patterns. Now I am going to show you some more common measurements that you might run into. You will need someone else to take these measurements for you for the best accuracy.

Taking the Measurements

Neck: To take the neck measurement wrap the measuring tape around the part of your neck that a collar would normally fit, about an inch from the meeting of your neck and shoulders. This should be just below your larynx. Be careful to hold the tape level. This is one measurement you should be ok to take on yourself.

Shoulder: Measure from the beginning of the arm to the beginning of the neck. This is the distance from where your collar ends to where your sleeve would start. Lastly, keep your shoulders relaxed when you take this measurement.

Inseam: This measurement will help you make your pants the correct length. Measure from just below your crotch to the bottom of your ankle bone. If you don’t have anyone to help you take this measurement, you can use a pair of pants that fit well. Measure from the crotch of the jeans to the hem. This will accurately reflect your inseam.

Waist to floor: This measurement is used to help you determine the out seam on a pair of pants or the length of a dress. Measure from your natural waist, where you take your waist measurement to the floor. Make sure to hold your measuring take straight and stand upright with good posture when taking this measurement. If you are making a dress and you want it to be floor length, wear the shoes you are planning to wear with the dress, otherwise your dress will end up too short.
