Removing the hood from my baby’s vest was a no brainer for me. I don’t like to put my baby in hoods. She doesn’t like them unless she’s outside and cold, they get in the way when I try to put her in her car seat and are just overall not helpful for my baby. I wanted to keep this adorable vest, but my baby never wore it because of the hood, so I decided to remove the hood so she could wear it more often! This was so easy and only took a few minutes to do.

The vest in question

Removing the hood

First look at your hood and where it attaches to your vest, mine had a stitch that was about 1/4″ from the base of the hood, which is where you will sew down your raw edge. Next you need to look at the type of fabric the vest is. If it is a fabric that is going to fray, you will need to plan on folding your fabric under. You will want to double the distance from the stitching to the edge of your hood. Mine is fleece so I don’t need to worry about fraying and I’m not doing an extra fold. I cut the hood off at 3/8″ from the base of the hood.

Pinning down the hood

After cutting the hood off, you will need to fold and pin your hood. You’ll want to press your fabric down with an iron for a nice crisp look as well. If you need to do an extra fold, start by folding your fabric in so the raw edge is touching the inside of the edge of the hood, press and move on to the next step: fold the hood down so the top of your vest looks finished, pin into place. At the zipper, I slightly tucked the edge in so it didn’t go over the zipper part.

Sewing your hood edge

Line your sewing machine up with the existing stitches and sew along the length of the neck of your vest. You will want to sew with the outside of your vest facing up so you can follow along with the preexisting stitches. That’s it! Enjoy your new hoodless vest!
