Materials Needed

  • quilling tool
  • 1/8″ paper in 4-6 coordinating colors (precut is best, this paper will work great)
  • 8″x10″ white or cream cardstock
  • clear glue
  • foam or corkboard (optional)
  • pins (optional)

Getting started

The first step is to make a stencil for your chosen letter. You can print or draw on your cardstock. If you choose to print a letter, make sure you have chosen the lightest gray color and that it is just an outline. Otherwise you can just draw with a pencil, make sure to keep it as light as possible so if you don’t get the paper over your line perfectly it won’t be noticeable.

Adding paper to your letter

This next part is a little tricky, you need to line your letter with your 1/8″ paper. It can be hard to get it to stand upright in the correct place. I needed to use corkboard and pins to keep my paper in the right spot. You’ll want to put glue on the paper, but not too much. Too avoid using too much glue, I make a small puddle on the corner of my workspace and let it get a little tacky, then just run the edge of your paper through it and put it immediately on your outline. Try to use as few pins as possible and don’t put them in very far so the holes won’t be noticeable.

Adding embellishments to your quilled letter

This is the fun part! Take two to three colors and make a variety of closed shapes. I did lots of tear drop shapes, flowers and a paisley. Also make sure to do a variety of sizes. Do a few shapes and then place them in your letter, but don’t glue them in until later so you can move them around if you don’t end up liking them where they are. Once you get enough pieces and get them in place, start gluing!

Now it’s time to add all the little filler pieces. Take 2-4 colors and do lots of little scrolls. I chose to do only simple loose scrolls, but you could get fancier, and do heart, V, C, S or other types of scrolls. Start with two colors, then added the second set of colors later. I did 5-10 scrolls, and placed them, then glued them in and repeated.

Now your quilled letter is complete! The only steps left are to find a nice picture frame and great place to put it!
