I have this pair of linen pants I like to wear to work, but it has a large hole in it, and if I put my keys in it, they fall out. I decided I could fix a hole in a pocket by using a patch. It was actually totally easy to do! It only took a few minutes to fix.
Materials
Pair of pants with a hole in them
matching thread (if you have patch pockets like mine, this is super important)
Iron on patch or iron on interfacing (I used interfacing because I was patching thin linen pants. Patches tend to be heavier weight fabric and will make a noticeable line on thin clothing, a thick iron on interfacing is a better choice for thin fabric.)
Iron
Fixing the pocket
Start by cutting out a small piece of your iron patch/interfacing (I used interfacing so I am just going to say interfacing from here on) You want the interfacing to be bigger than the hole in your pocket, about 1/2″ larger. Bring the torn edges of your pocket together so they are touching or overlapping slightly. Pin this into place if you need to. Lay your interfacing down over the hole and iron.
Technically you could stop at this point, you did fix a hole in a pocket, but I don’t really trust iron on to stay put after a few washes, so I sewed it too. I started by sewing the bottom of the patch. Because these are patch pockets, this is the visible line on the outside of my pants. If you are fixing pants like this, having matching thread is important. I was able to sew this part with the sewing machine.
Next I sewed along the outside of the other 3 sides of the interfacing. I had to hand sew these parts because my sewing machine couldn’t reach them without sewing the pocket shut! You don’t need to hand sew if you can sew around your interfacing patch with your machine.
