It’s a daunting task: you go into the craft store to pick up a new sewing needle. When you get there you are faced with a wall of sewing needles and you have no idea which one to choose! Well, I am here to guide you so you can confidently make your choice and get the best needle for your project.

Universal Needle

This is your general, all purpose needle, it will work decently well on any fabric and is an essential sewing needle to have. If you can only have one sewing needle, this is the one. The point is slightly rounded which makes it particularly good for woven fabrics. It works on other fabrics as well.

Ballpoint Needle

The ballpoint needle is great for knits and spandex. The ballpoint needle is rounded, which makes the needle push the fabric aside instead of piercing through the fabric. This needle works well even for large knits

Quilting Needle

This is great for quilting, but also for any time you need to go through multiple layers of fabric, this needle is super pointed and sharp, which helps it pierce through lots of pieces of fabric and batting. This needle is essential if you are going to make your own quilt, it makes quilting so much easier.

Twin Needle

This has two needles connected by one shaft. This is used to make two parallel lines of stitches on your fabric. It’s most commonly used for hems on clothing or decorative stitches. I have a whole post about twin needles here.
