I decided to spruce up my kitchen with a Valentine’s embroidered dish towel. This was an easy project that used mostly scraps from my sewing pile. I got the dish towel from the dollar store so it was only $1.25.

Materials

  • red dish towel
  • 2 4 inch squares in both pink and purple
  • 36″ of white eyelet lace (or double the length of the dishtowel)
  • 1-3 matching threads (I chose to do all pink, but pink, purple and white would also look nice)

How to make your embroidered dishtowel

Start by taking your pieces of fabric and cut them into two equal sized hearts, about 4 inches wide.

Place them centered on your dishtowel. To center them, fold your towel in half then half again, fold the outside 1/4 of each side of the towel back. Fold it down lengthwise like you would if your were hanging it up on your stove handle.

Place your hearts in the middle of the folded towel. Make sure they slightly overlap. Pin in place once you are happy with the placement.

Set up your sewing machine. In addition to your matching thread, set your machine to zig zag stitch, make sure you’re stitches are really close together and not too wide. Check the length and width on a scrap first.

Make sure the edge of the heart is in the center of the needle. Stitch all the way along the outside of the hearts. Switch colors when you switch hearts if you choose to do multiple colors of thread.

Sew slowly and stop and turn the towel frequently to make sure you are keeping the edge of the hearts centered in your zig zag. When you get to the point and dip I the heart, sew all the way to the end, then turn for the cleanest looking lines.

Adding the ruffle

Fold the ends of your lace in 1/4 inch then fold in again. Sew up each side about 1/8 inch seam.

Set your sewing machine to a basting stitch and baste the long edge of the lace. Pull the stitch to create the ruffle. Make sure it’s the same length as your dishtowel.

With right sides together, sew the lace to the towel with a 5/8 inch seam.

Fold the lace down and press the lace to the towel. Pin.

Sew the lace down so it hangs correctly. Sew 1/2 inch away from the top of the lace.
