I wanted to make a bummie cover for my baby to wear under her dresses as a diaper cover. This pattern is meant to be a diaper cover, but you can use them as shorts as well! I used a jersey knit fabric since I wanted this diaper cover to fit a bit more snug. This pattern comes in sizes 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12.
Materials needed
- Matching Spool of thread
- 1/3 yd of knit fabric (This is assuming you are using 60″ fabric, if you are using 40″ you will need more)
- pdf pattern
Laying out your pattern
Lay out your pattern as seen in the picture below. This fabric is not folded, it is a single layer. You will need to make two leg pieces, I only have one pictured, make sure to cut a second leg piece in the space above the first.
Constructing your bummie
Once you have your bummie pieces cut out, pin the sides of the front and back together. Make sure you put right sides together (if your fabric has an obvious right/wrong side) Sew up each side using a 1/2″ seam allowance. Press your seams down
Now pin and sew the crotch of the bummie. Press your seam down after. Again, use a 1/2″ seam allowance
Adding your cuffs
Now it’s time to add the leg cuffs to your bummie. I made the leg cuffs really short, but if you want to use these more as pants, you may want to make the cuffs a little wider than the pattern. Get your leg cuff pieces and sew the short sides together, with right sides touching. Then press your seams, and fold your cuff in half lengthwise, press it down so it will stay nice and crisp while you sew.
Now we are going to attach the leg cuffs to the bummie. The cuffs are slightly smaller than the leg holes, to create an elastic, fitted effect, but that makes it a little difficult to get the cuffs attached. First, you will want to put 4 equally spaced pins on both the cuffs and leg holes. Fold the cuffs in half twice and pin each fold to mark it. Do the same for the leg holes. Then you will line up the pins with each other. Make sure your seams line up. Gently stretch the cuff to place lots of pins in your cuffs. Your leg cuffs should be on the inside of the leg holes, with the right sides touching. When you sew these holes make sure you gently stretch the cuffs to avoid any puckers. Since the cuffs are small, use a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Last, attach the waistband to your bummie the same way you attached your leg cuffs, using a 1/2″ seam this time, and you are done!
