Some ways to use up fabric scraps

Every sewist has a shelf, or box, or bag full of scrap fabric. But sometimes we don’t know what to do with them. Here’s five ideas to help you use up the that scrap pile you’ve been accumulating!

1. Use it for stuffing other projects.

I love to use small scrap fabric pieces as stuffing for other projects. It can be especially good for filling up crochet/knit projects because it’s less likely to poke between the stitches than fluffy stuffing. I like to use my really tiny scraps for this

2. Scrap quilt

I haven’t made one of these yet, buy my grandma has made a few and they are gorgeous! There are tons of different methods to make a scrap quilt. Let me know in the comments if you’re interested in a scrap quilt tutorial.

3. Scrap blocks

Scrap Fabric blocks. two blocks made of different fabrics on each side.

If you have a baby in your life, they are sure to love these scrap blocks, bonus points if you have lots of different textured fabric.

4. Use your scraps for experiments!

This is especially for scraps you get before making a pattern or a unique fabric. Use your scraps to work out the correct tension of your sewing machine or try out a new stitch/thread color. You can also see how your scraps respond to fabric dye.

5. Use for patches

When you’re patching up clothing, you usually need to put a piece of fabric under the hole/tear in your clothes to reinforce your stitching. Using scrap pieces of fabric to patch can be so fun. You can use it underneath to do a hidden patch, or if you like a noticeable repair, you can put a fun piece of fabric over to make a cute little patch.
